Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-transport/11690110/Motorist-becomes-first-convicted-of-hogging-motorway-middle-lane.html

At fkin last! This has got to be the bane of all motoring bad habits and biggest cause of motorway traffic jams.

Why is it so difficult to get into a vast percentage of drivers' thick heads to keep left unless you are overtaking.

Before anyone tries to stereotype the type of person that does this I am convinced that both sexes are culpable and no particular racial background or age group are worse than another.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Have to say Right Lane Hoggers are worse though.
At least most MLH:s have a rationale for their actions whereas RLH:s are just fully retarded.
They are most commonly seen on 50mph stretches.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Actually it is. Because lane 3 is full of people overtaking people in lane 2 that shouldn't be there. Completely congesting lanes 2 and 3 whilst lane 1 remains empty.

If a motorway was 15 lanes wide, lane 15 would be as the outside lanes are now busy as the middle lane hoggers would be in lane 14 because people just can't drive in the correct lanes

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Most motorist who when driving down the centre lane encounter a vehicle also overtaking but not going quite so fast simply signal pull out and overtake then return to the centre lane.

It's into difficult is it?

Because driving in an overtaking lane whilst not overtaking is illegal you fucking simpleton

Hobby Cops are frowned upon on the road.

Is this shit still going on?

SO...I am driving in the middle lane at the MAXIMUM speed of 70mph and I have to move over to let other drivers overtake me, thereby breaking the law?

Oh the irony

I could always just click the link and read it properly I guess...

Makes sense now...

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Granted, I didn't read the article fully. Was he lumbering along at below 70mph and making people drive around him?

He who got the fine was a proper Hogger. I don't think Pervy has grasped the concept tbf.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Pony, I would agree with that, but this is where the rules regarding middle lane hogging fall in to a grey area.

They have set the bar now by fining one driver. How they constitute middle lane hogging will be shady, because like you say, you may just be cruising there waiting for an opportunity to get back in to the left hand lane. But will you take the first opportunity you can? will you decrease your speed to allow yourself to join back to that lane? For me, it could end up being down to the opinion of the witnessing officer which isn't right.

I appreciate the highway code says you should stay in the left and only use the other lanes to over take but lets face it, when common sense prevails there are chunks of the highway code that aren't abidable 100% of the time.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
I deal with lane hoggers by pulling in front of them and gradually reducing my speed. Then I drive off into the sunset laughing to myself and feeling like I've done some good in the world.

White Pony 11:26 Thu Jun 25
Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
The problem is Pervy, you also have to apply some common sense.

It's not about moving to the left hand lane every single time you finish overtaking a vehicle. If the left hand lane is congested and I want to move along at 80, in those situations, I'll stick to the middle lane because I am still overtaking. On some stretches of motorway, I hardly move into the slow lane at all because it isn't appropriate to do so. If you are constantly moving in and out of the slow lane and altering your speed, you're not applying common sense.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
I drive from Kent to Essex and back every day and I can safely say if i stuck to the left hand lane the whole way it would take me twice as long as it does. Which is long enough as it is. I actually tried this on the way home yesterday and found myself poodling along at 60 max before swapping lanes, back and forth.

I would suggest the majority of accidents are due to people changing lanes and not looking properly, so the more times you have to change lane the more likely you are to be involved in one.

If everyone drove in single file in the left hand lane, only changing to overtake, it'd take forever to get anywhere.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
While we are on the subject ( and I write as someone involved to some degree in the transport sector), how about HGVs who decide to overtake another truck going about 2 miles an hour faster on a dual carriageway and take a mile or two to complete, stopping anyone from doing more than about 55mph.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Its all very very simple really, even for the morons on here.
If you want to drive at the current speed limit of 70 mph, then stay safely in the middle lane which avoids weaving over to the inside lane every ten seconds.
Leave the outside lane to the speed freaks and law breakers who drive over 70 mph.
Its so obvious. Perhaps a little too simple for some to comprehend.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Part 264 of the Highway Code says: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past."

Irony of Second Opinion being a middle lane cunt and calling other people stupid at the same time

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
The other thing that fucks me off with these middle lane cunts is that they refuse to move over to let you over-take.

So you move out of left hand land of three to overtake and then approach a middle lane cunt. You are being overtaken on right hand lane so can't overtake middle lane cunt yet they don't move over to let you pass like they would do if in right hand lane.

Cunts.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Buses, coaches, minibuses all up to 12 metres in length are now allowed to do 70 mph on UK motorways.

As for Tesco lorries I got stuck behind one on the M11 recently and he kept to 55mph for miles.

Idiot

Coaches are limited to 60 mph
Tesco is 50 mph

A few container co's are limited to 52

We can obviously tell you are not a real driver

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
I was a passenger on a coach recently..and to relieve the boredom watched the driving habits of others.
Pretty horrific.
Wouldnt have noticed most of it if i was. driving.
The worst i saw was one idiot joining from the slip road in heavy traffic and sliding straight across to the inside lane. Unbelievable.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
Second, you are surely on a wind up?

So, moving your car left and right is dangerous? Course it isn't. Not unless you're doing it wrong.

I drive on all the motorways across the country day in, day out, and at different times. I probably average about 80, and I use the left hand lane a fair bit. Funnily enough, I've never had an accident or even a near-miss driving like this. But yes, it's clearly highly irresponsible of me.

The old grandad sitting in the middle lane is actually the one who will cause the dangerous situations because everybody else is trying to get around them, even when there's nothing in the slow lane. Every fucking day I'm driving in the left hand lane and I'll approach some moron who's sat in the middle, overtaking nothing. I then have to move over 2 lanes to overtake them, and then move back across 2 lanes into the empty left lane when I'm done. Absolute clueless halfwits.

Re: Driver Fined for Middle Lane Hogging
National Express coaches, and others, are now allowed to travel at up to 70 mph on motorways and Tesco lorries now average 55mph in order to save fuel.

Neither of these two things make driving on motorways any easier.
